Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the United Kingdom’s longest established operational airports, having been officially opened in 1933. It is an international airport serving the city of Liverpool and North West England. The airport is named after assassinated musician and peace activist John Lennon and is situated 11 kilometers southeast of Liverpool City Centre, adjacent to the River Mersey. Liverpool airport has one terminal which sees 5.5 million passengers fly to over 60 destinations each year. There are shops, bars and restaurants at the airport. Other facilities include bureaux de change, children’s play areas, business facilities (including fax and internet) and tourist information. Disabled facilities are good; those with special needs should contact their airline in advance. Public transportation to and from the airport is reliable and frequent with a choice of trains, coaches, taxis and car hire. Parking can be booked via the airport website. There are regular express buses to the city centre. Garston and Hunts Cross are the nearest rail stations to the Airport serving the local/regional rail network. Car rental offices at Liverpool airport are available adjacent to Arrivals. A dedicated car rental car park is also located in close proximity to the terminal building. Those wishing to drive to the airport will find it easily accessible and well sign posted from the access roads. Until 2007 it was one of Europe’s fastest growing airports, having increased its annual passenger numbers from 875,000 in 1998 to 5.47 million. The growth rate was 10.2% in 2007. 500,000 passengers were handled in one month, for the first time, during May 2007.
